Opting for the more progressive 1-4-3-3, Daniele De Rossi allows his defensive line to remain compact but offers an additional element of creativity, with both the left back and right back given increased freedom to impact play in the final third. His system has appeared to reinvigorate the majority of Roma’s creative talents (Pellegrini, Dybala), playing nicely into their strengths and observing a significant increase in attacking output as a result.
Due to Roma side’s familiarity with the more traditional variations of the five-at-the-back formations, De Rossi has produced variations of the 3-5-2. Most notably against Inter and Torino, this allowed Roma to be more structurally compact without sacrificing the progressive nature. In this variation Roma remain progressive in the 1-3-5-2, with left wing-back advancing and Mancini looking to run beyond the defensive line while Dybala operates deeper.
Since De Rossi has taken the team, Roma’s attacking successfully recorded 2.85 goals per game (Gpg) since first match in charge against Hellas Verona, this significantly trumps the 1.5 gpg recorded under Mourinho’s watch in 2023/24. This upward trajectory of their statistics is only reinforced by their expected goal figures, with a non-penalty goals(npG) minus non-penalty expected goals (npxG) figure of +11.5. In simpler terms, Roma are significantly exceeding their ability to find the net despite not having produced a corresponding amount of optimal goal-scoring opportunities.
The graph presented below highlights the upturn in form for Roma in their goals per game. The red arrow indicates the beginning of De Rossi’s tenure with figures compared to an average of 1.75, marked by the hashed line.
