Adopting 1-4-3-3 formation, Eddie Howe has assigned Newcastle players fairly traditional roles with an almost rigid division between formations. The mystery is revealed when we understand that, as we proceed higher up, the team rotates towards 1-3-4-3.
In the early build-up Newcastle look for a numerical advantage in the playmaking area, but the higher on the rival’s half, the more often they look for direct fast passes through the opposing defensive line. To this end, the full-backs do not push high in an attempt to stretch the press zone rather giving the central midfielders the choice of either going down outside with the option of playing on the wing or inside playing through the middle.
